Sound, by design

From early-stage engineering to final tuning, Bentley treats sound as a fundamental part of the driving experience. This is how science, collaboration and emotion shape what you hear inside the cabin.

Sound, by design

Words: James Day

In a modern luxury car, sound is no longer a secondary consideration. As engines quieten and cabins become more refined, what you hear – and how you hear it – is part of the experience. At Bentley, sound is treated with the same seriousness as ride comfort, materials or craftsmanship: something shaped deliberately, not added later.

That approach begins with a simple premise. A Bentley cabin is already an unusually calm, well-insulated space. Thick glazing, extensive leather trim and rigorous noise suppression create an environment where sound can be shaped with precision. The work that follows is about control: “We have to ensure the music feels natural, immersive and appropriate to the character of the car,” says Ben Woolley, Technical Manager of the Bentley audio team.

ENGINEERED FROM DAY ONE
Audio engineering at Bentley begins at the earliest stages of vehicle development. Once a platform is selected, the sound team works alongside the wider Bentley Research and Development team to define what the car must be capable of by using an attribute process and technical leveling, from speaker configurations to the software architecture that supports immersive formats.

“We build in the speaker configurations to support the technologies we need,” says Steve Norcup, who leads the Bentley audio team. “Do we need immersive sound? Do we need Dolby Atmos 5.1? Do we need Dolby Atmos 7.1.4?”

Rather than accepting a standard specification, Bentley feeds requirements back into the platform, often years ahead of launch. That can mean increasing channel counts, introducing headrest and height speakers, or expanding digital signal processing capabilities beyond what the base platform was designed to support.

You should feel part of the music, as if you’re at a concert. It should never feel clinical; it should feel full of emotion.

CALIBRATING THE CABIN
Designing sound for a car is shaped as much by physical constraint as by musical intent. As Speaker Engineer Simon Wright says: “Speaker placement must coexist with safety structures, styling priorities and manufacturing realities.” Even when speakers sit in an ideal position, their performance can be undermined by the materials placed in front of them.

Bentley’s audio team works closely with trim and design colleagues to ensure visual decisions do not compromise acoustic performance. Speaker grilles, in particular, demand careful attention as their transparency directly affects clarity, balance and presence. “If you put your hand over your mouth and talk, no one can hear you, and it’s the same with a speaker, they need to breathe and not be restricted,” adds Norcup.

Weight is another topic, as are eco-credentials, where the team will look to incorporate sustainable materials, especially if designing something entirely new. Once the engineering framework is set, responsibility shifts from systems to judgement. Final tuning is led by Bentley’s sound team, where data, market research and collaboration converge. Hearing is believing, however, so this never fully replaces listening.

For Aris Rodis, Bentley’s Lead Tuning Engineer, the objective is perfection. A Bentley system should feel expansive and immersive, drawing the listener into the music. That requires restraint as much as precision, and a willingness to stop adjusting when the balance feels right.

“It’s a mix of everything, combining my personal philosophy, market data, and, of course, the stakeholders here at Bentley as well,” says Rodis. “When everything is working, a Bentley owner should experience a warm sound, a big sound, almost a live sound that feels completely immersive.”
